abandoned road into Catawissa, PA

this old road ran from Catawissa along the Susquehanna River towards Riverside. however when a small bridge, and i do mean small, collapsed, this section of the road was closed. there was very little traffic on the one lane dirt road since there were no homes for several miles outside of Catawissa. a large iron bridge over Catawissa Creek remained open until the 90's in order to service the three homes along the road just across the creek. however those homes were bought by the state and torn down, followed by the bridge being torn down. naturally the cost of upkeep on the bridge was not worth the three homes it serviced. now the only way to access the old road from Catawissa is to cross the current railroad bridge over the creek.

this is on the other side of the creek looking toward where the bridge was. i'm not sure why they bothered to place a road closed sign here since there was no way to get a car back there anyway.

this is believed to be the location of the small bridge that collapsed. however, it's been a long time since that would have been considered a bridge.




this is as far as i've gone along the road so far. although i do plan on continuing till the other end of the closed section at some point.

I like this series. How active is that rail line?

There are so many interesting places in Pennsylvania. I spent a few years driving a truck in the mid 90's and we ran PA a lot, not in this exact area but fairly close by: up & down US 15 through Williamsport was a common run. Also went to the western part of the state a lot, I-79 to Pittsburgh and US 119 (to Indiana PA) and US 219 (to Johnstown PA)

sorry bout the late reply. As for the railroad line, I'm not sure exactly how many trains per day. I would say it's not more than a couple. I rarely get to Catawissa any more, every where I normally go is in other directions. I can't even remember the last time I saw a train on those tracks.

I must agree with you that there's no shortage of interesting places in PA. I plan on getting to a few more of them sometime in the upcoming months.

US 15 from Williamsport to New York was always a beautiful drive, although now it's all interstate quality. It now is certainly a much easier drive but no where near as memorable.

went back out to the old road. sometime during the last couple years a bad storm brought down a few large trees onto the road. the road is no longer being cleared at all for use by dirt bikes and four wheelers.
